AIRLINES In 1990 and 1991, the U.S. airline industry suffered large financial losses. The industrys poor financial performance was the result of several factors, the most important being the recession, higher fuel prices, the adverse effect of the Persian Gulf conflict on international air travel and rising debt service costs. During 1990 and 1991, the Persian Gulf conflict required the first activation of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) program since it was established in 1952. Under the program, the Department of Defense may requisition previously contracted passenger and cargo aircraft from commercial air carriers to augment the militarys own airlift capacity. The airline industry responded rapidly to aid the military build up in the Persian Gulf. By July 15, 1991, commercial aircraft had flown over 5,315 missions, and delivered 690,150 troops and 228,400 tons of material in support of military requirements.

Dear Abby: Last Saturday afternoon, I attended a cousins baby shower hosted by our “Aunt Flo.” It was held at a local restaurant, and Flo provided the cake and decorations. The guests were expected to pay for their own meals and drinks. The invitation revealed nothing about this arrangement. Those of us attending didnt find out until we called to RSVP. It seems unfair to burden guests with this cost, when they are also paying for a baby gift — not to mention travel expenses for those who came from out of town. Dear I or I: Aunt Flo did not “host” the shower — she simply arranged it. When a no-host party invitation is issued, it should clearly state that guests will be expected to pay their own way.
Having a baby is one of the most joyous
occasions in life, and there are many different ways to celebrate the
event. Baby shower invitations experts, Custom Creations by Leslie ,
have fun baby shower tips to ensure the perfect baby shower.

“One of the most frequently asked questions regarding baby showers is
timing,” said Leslie Ciriaco of Custom Creations by Leslie. “If you have
the shower too close to the actual time of delivery, the mommy-to-be might
not enjoy it fully. However, holding it too early in the pregnancy wont
have the full impact. The shower should be held about a month or two before
the expected arrival of the baby, with baby
shower invitations sent out six to eight weeks prior to the event.”

There are many different fun themes for baby showers not limited to the sex
of the baby. Some ideas for baby shower themes include:

A new recent trend for baby showers is holding raffles. Attendees must
bring one package of baby diapers for each entry into the raffle, and the
winner gets a high-quality item such as a camera or an MP3 player. The
mommy-to-be gets to keep all of the diapers, and often doesnt have to buy
diapers for months after the baby is born. Be sure to specify what will be
raffled off on baby shower invitations to ensure lots of entries. In
addition, list the time, date, RSVP information and where the mommy-to-be
is registered on baby shower invitations as well.

Family Bridges is offering in-person interpreters and document translation, and will provide language training for staff at businesses, community-based organizations and government agencies. In a few months, the agency will also offer interpreters over the phone, said Karen Hoy, manager of the program.
Language Training and Skills The need for foreign language skills. Foreign language skills play a significant role in work for the State Department or its international information programs. These are also vital to HUMINT and SIGINT (human and signals intelligence respectively) work ranging from undercover operations to analysis of raw data captured by eavesdropping. Likewise, military organizationsparticularly elite groups such as Delta Force or the Navy SEALsoften look for personnel with a good working knowledge of a language or languages. In many cases, particularly military or intelligence work, knowledge of obscure languages is likely to be in demand. A diplomat stationed in a West African country, for instance, may speak French to most contacts in the capital city, but intelligence or military operations are likely to take personnel deep into the hinterlands or the underbelly of urban society, where only local languages or dialects are spoken. For example, during the U.S. military effort in Afghanistan in 2001 and thereafter, proficiency in Pashto, Dari, Tajik, and Farsi, the dominant languages in that country, was greatly in demand.

Three days after furniture-makers filed a petition seeking the imposition of antidumping duties of Chinese wood bedroom furniture, the CEO of Furniture Brands International, one of Americas largest furniture manufacturers, vowed to fight against it. Joe Dorn, of the Washington, DC, law firm King Spalding, represents the coalition and union. The day of the filing, Dorn said, The petition presents very compelling evidence of the serious injury suffered by the U.S. wood bedroom industry and its workers from a surge of unfairly priced imports from China. The petition states, Dumped imports were equal to 44 percent of the value of domestic production and 23 percent of the value of apparent domestic consumption in 2002. During January to June 2003, it says, dumped imports were equal to 67 percent of domestic production and 30 percent of apparent consumption. It also contends (The) petitioners net sales value decreased by 23 percent from 2000 to 2002, and by another 24 percent from the periods January to June 2002 (and) January to June 2003.

Cell phones and Blackberries are increasingly drawing the ire of educators and law enforcers. Although the vast majority of teens use cell phones to keep in touch with their families or social networking, these devices are being used, increasingly, for negative and/or illegal purposes. Text messages and camera phones are being used to cheat on tests. Cell phones also are being used to bait students into fights. In one case, a student recorded the altercation on a cell phone and showed it off to students at school the next day. Students have used text messaging to spread horrible gossip regarding the deaths of fellow classmates. School administrators have had to interrupt class time with overhead announcements to counteract such rumors.
For just 75 cents a month, this bill would give cell phone users an extra level of security by identifying their location in case of an emergency. Many people carry cell phones as a safety measure, but in certain cases their value is limited. In an emergency situation, a cell phone can be used to call 911, but unless the person calling can give instructions on where the emergency is, dispatchers are helpless to know where to send help.

Retirement Planning Winnipeg

August 28th, 2008

Early retirement, or retirement at any age, may be less than an enjoyable experience without sufficient income. Generally, financial planners recommend that an individual should strive to maintain 70 percent to 80 percent of his or her final working years income during retirement and have made provisions to increase income in retirement to keep up with inflation. A small but growing number of financial planners recommend that individuals should strive for 100 percent or more income replacement during retirement years. (3) The logic behind this recommendation is that individuals tend to spend more money when they have time to do what they would like to do. In planning for retirement at any age, the first task is to determine the income desired in retirement and examine how those income goals will be met. The exact amount of income that an individual needs in retirement is specific to each individuals financial circumstances and goals. For example, an individual or couple with a home that is paid for would li kely spend less on housing in retirement than an individual or couple who are still paying off their home or renting. Financial planners generally suggest that an individuals retirement plan include at least three important sources of retirement income. These sources usually include Social Security benefits, personal savings/investments, and employer/employee retirement accounts, such as defined benefit plans, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and IRAs. Of the aggregate income received by retired Americans, Social Security benefits consist of 42.5 percent; individual savings and investments generate 36 percent; and employer/employee retirement benefits make up 21.5 percent of retirement income. (4) The anticipated income from each of these sources should be carefully examined prior to making the decision to retire.
Offering a retirement plan is a great benefit to attract and retain employees, but it can carry many liabilities. By giving your employees the power to make their own retirement plan investment decisions, you can shift some of the liability of your plan to them. The Opportunity The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) permits, but does not require, a plan to provide for participant-directed investments. If the plan satisfies the requirements of the Act, the participants assume responsibility for their investment choices, but the fiduciary remains responsible for: Punctually and accurately carrying out participant directions.
M O N E Y F O R L I F E Several options are available to those who work for small business In talking to clients who are employed by local small businesses, I find that many are frustrated because his or her employer doesnt provide a retirement plan.

LAW IN BUSINESSLaw governs and regulates virtually all aspects of the business process, from the right to engage in a business or trade, to the legal form of a business, to agreements for buying and selling merchandise or rendering services. Law regulates the quality of products sold and the advertising of products for sale. Law governs the employment relationship, protects business property, and taxes business income. This article explores the relationship of business and law in several of these areas.Business in the United States is regulated by federal and state laws as well as by local ordinances. State law regulating forms of business, business agreements, and some taxes is the most important. Federal law regulates such things as advertising, civil rights, and protection of such property as inventions. Local law typically regulates business hours, where one can do business (zoning), and health and safety.

Chelation

August 26th, 2008

Chelators added to pectinase-rich enzyme mixtures increase the efficiency of enzyme retting of flax. The multitude of available chelators requires research to optimize enzyme retting for cost and fiber quality. Of several chelators tested, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is the most effective in sequestering calcium from solution, with substantial activity even at pH 4 or 5. Phosphate is also effective, but only at high pH. EDTA and Mayoquest 200, a commercial product with -37% EDTA, in combination with Viscozyme L or Lyvelin, commercial enzymes with polygalacturonase activities, yield high Fried test scores, indicating efficient separation of fibers from core tissues. Neither chelator nor enzyme at the levels tested alone effectively rets flax at a pH of around 5. In contrast, EDTA at 20 mmol/L levels and alkaline pH yields high Fried test scores. The addition of BioPrep, a commercial pectate lyase, does not influence retting measured by the Fried test with EDTA at alkaline pH, but the enzyme does improve retting with the weaker chelator sodium tripolyphosphate. The quality of fibers, as determined by the yield of fine fibers obtained by passing retted flax through the Shirley analyzer, is substantially greater with EDTA plus Viscozyme at pH 5 than alkaline chemical retting with EDTA, sodium tripolyphosphate, or sodium oxalate without enzyme. EDTA is the most effective chelator at acidic pH levels for stimulating flax retting by various commercial pectinase-rich enzyme mixtures. However, other less expensive candidates require additional study for more cost-effective formulations and applicable fiber properties. Retting is the process by which fibers in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) stems and other bast plants are separated from the nonfiber tissues. This process, which is usually microbial, is the major limitation in producing linen fibers [25]. For commercial flax fiber operations, flax stems are pulled from the ground and dew retted, in which indigenous fungi colonize and degrade the nonfiher tissues to liberate fibers. After dew retting, the stems are mechanically cleaned to remove shive and other contaminants from fibers for use in linen yarns and fabrics. While currently the method of choice, dew retting is restricted to geographical regions with appropriate climates, and the resulting fibers are often inconsistent in quality with significant amounts of dirt and contaminants [21, 25]. Therefore, considerable research has focused on alternative chemical and enzymatic methods to improve the consistency of fiber quality [1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 21, 22, 25]. Increasing U.S. interest in flax fibers for use as cottonized fibers in textiles [4] and for bio-composites [19] globally provides a strong impetus to improve flax retting. The importance of pectin as a binder between cells and the necessity to remove it during retting has been acknowledged for several decades [25]. Therefore, pectinases, and in particular endopolygalacturonases, are effective in retting flax [2, 4, 11, 12, 17, 25, 26]. However, pectin is a complicated polysaccharide that varies in structure [16]. In nonmethylated pectins, often Ca2+ binds carboxyl groups of adjacent molecules, thus stabilizing pectins and thereby plant structure [20]. In flax, recent research has indicated that acidic pectins and Ca2+ are located preferentially in the epidermal regions of flax [18], likely contributing to the structural integrity of the stem and bast fibers. Therefore, complex formers, e.g., chelators, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to remove Ca2+ have proven useful in retting flax and in facilitating enzyme retting [4, 7, 9, 11, 21].
The government is beginning a $30 million study to determine once and for all whether chelation therapy offers any benefit for sufferers of heart disease. Chelation therapy is the main treatment for lead poisoning. A manmade amino acid called EDTA is seeped into patients blood, through a vein, to sop up the toxic metal so it can be excreted in urine. Some doctors have argued for decades that chelation therapy also could clear blocked heart arteries, perhaps by sopping up inflammation-causing molecules or calcium in buildups that clog blood vessels. Federal regulators have cracked down on proponents for falsely promoting chelation as a proven heart remedy — several years ago the Federal Trade Commission forced a doctors group to quit such advertising — and warned that the therapy can cause kidney damage or other side effects, especially if not administered by a properly trained professional.

Real Estate Listings

August 26th, 2008

Abstract Despite the large amount of research that has been devoted to analyzing the determinants of residential real estate agent income, little attention has been directed at how this income is generated.1 Numerous papers (e.g., Follain, Lutes, and Meier, 1987; Glower and Hendershott (1988); and Crellin, Frew, and Jud, 1988) have found that education, experience, firm size, and hours worked have a positive impact on agent income. Abelson, Kacmar, and Jackofsky (1990), Sirmans and Swicegood (1997), and Simians and Swicegood (2000) also found a positive relationship between non-pecuniary factors such as job satisfaction and agent performance. These studies assume, if only implicitly, that salespeople are indifferent as to the way this income is produced, whether from their own listings or from the sale of other agents listings. This, in fact, may not be the case. Certain agent activities may well have greater income producing potential than other types of actions. If this conjecture is true, then specialization in those types of activities would provide the greatest potential for income production. For example, effort spent in generating property listings may prove more productive than the same amount of effort spent trying to market these properties to buyers. Agents are not all created equal; those salespeople who have the talent or skill set that makes them more effective at listing and selling property may also earn more than agents specializing in sales of property to buyers or vice versa. Alternatively, a balanced output of listings and sales may prove more revenue enhancing given current industry commission sharing arrangements. It is also possible that agents and firms, while both seeking to maximize their gains, do so in a different manner. The purpose of this research is to examine whether or not specializing in one side of the real estate transaction or producing a more balanced production portfolio of both listings and sales has a differential impact on agent income.

Hot Springs and GeysersA geyser requires three critical elements in order to form: a water supply, a heat source, and the proper kind of underground water circulation system. If only two of these three components are present, different features will form. For instance, if plenty of water is available but not much heat, a hot pool can form. If plenty of water and also plenty of heat exist, but not the proper kind of plumbing system, then a boiling hot spring commonly forms. Although there are many places in the world where hot springs can be found, geysers are extremely rare, largely due to the three specific requirements for their formation.

The Old Faithful geyser in Wyomings Yellowstone National Park erupts about once every 65 minutes, much to the delight of tourists. The water ejected during each eruption is at or near the boiling point, often reaches a height of 50 meters (approximately 170 feet), and has an estimated volume of 45,000 liters (12,000 gallons).

Designed in 1986, this chair was inspired by an old wooden armchair which had lost its upholstery cushions. “All you read was the structure,” says Morrison. The result is a commodious steel chair which is almost all structure, but stretched, pulled, bent and arched to make it both original and inviting. Its far more comfortable than youd expect - the back and seat slats are made from sprung steel and therefore have a bit of give. Morrison is a designers designer, one who constantly crops up in his peers “biggest influences” lists, and whose reputation was cemented by his joint-victory (with Ron Arad) of this years Perrier- Jouet Selfridges Design Prize. The Thinking Mans Chair is made by the Italian company Cappellini and costs pounds 865 to order (tel: 020 7739 1869). Another version has the chairs dimensions - the leg, back, drink-holders - printed on it in white lettering. It looks pretty, but whats it for? “I did it because it was going to be in an exhibition in Japan,” says Morrison, “At that time the Japanese had a reputation for copying, so I thought, if theyre going to do it, they might as well do it right.”
YOUR true Cypriot is a three-chair man. He may linger an hour over one black coffee but at the cafe table he likes three chairs to himself - one to sit on, one to hook his feet on, and a third as a rest for his elbow. With modern plastic chairs this simply does not work. But pottering through the foothills of the Troodos Mountains we stopped off at an old-style cafe-restaurant to find the proprietor, Spiros, in full three-chair mode. “Yassas, welcome!” he cried, disentangling himself and sitting us down in the wine arbour on “proper old Greek chairs, made of wood and cane”.

In addition, a number of states have adopted more stringent licensing requirements for chiropractors that include mandatory malpractice coverage. “Theres an increase in the pie itself,” Elliott notes, in explaining why National Union and other companies have opted to enter the field at this time, adding that even chiropractors that had coverage may be looking for higher limits to meet HMO and PPO requirements. “Theres a real need in the marketplace for a strong company with experience in professional liability.”Another factor that has induced new entrants is the fact that, despite increased competition, “rates have been holding fairly steady,” Elliott says. “Premiums are relatively small to begin with so, to a great extent, competition is based on coverage,” he adds. The National Union program offers both claims-made and occurrence policies, with defense costs provided outside the limits. Coverage is provided for manipulation under anesthesia, where allowed. Limits range from 100/300 to $1 million/$3 million. “Basically, we cover anything thats allowed under state law,” Elliott says, explaining that “this industry is pretty well looked after. State laws are pretty strict.”
The newly merged Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC) has awarded the Chiropractor of the Year award to two doctors - Drs. Christophe Dean and Thomas Klapp, who were honored for their outstanding commitment and leadership in the advancement of chiropractic in Michigan. The dual award marks the recent successful merger of the Michigan Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the Michigan Chiropractic Society (MCS). Dr. Dean, a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, has been a chiropractor since 1975. He has served on the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC) board of directors and was elected MCCs president in 2004. Dr. Klapp graduated cum laude from Life Chiropractic College in 1979. Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

Products to accessorize the yard, from patio sets and grills to elaborate fountains, planters and garden art, continue to be hot sellers in the lawn and garden department. The newest items launched at the National Hardware Show in Chicago Last month gave retailers a taste of whats in store for next spring: decorative copper sprinklers in unique designs, classic Italian-style pottery, patio heaters, colored and upscale looks in landscape lighting, lantern-style candle holders and bird feeders galore. But with all this decor, the yard and garden must be kept in respectable shape: Items that make gardening easier and save time are becoming more important. They range from easy-cut, expandable tree pruners to gardening soil infused with fertilizer or pesticide. In tools, the focus has shifted toward designing products for women, who account for an estimated 60% of gardeners.
PROVO — Let it glow, let it glow, let it glow. Thats the version of a popular Christmas tune a Utah County company is singing as the holiday approaches. The reason for the cheer? A growing interest in glowing lawn decorations without the inflated electricity bill. “Even my mother-in-law, who is a really hard sell, is totally excited about these,” said Clay DeGraff, who helps operate the company Solar Celebrations, which markets Holiday Heads.
Copper sculptures that spray out unique designs of water are almost too artistic to be called sprinklers. Theyve made the transition from functional to fashionable, and retailers as well as vendors expect these products to capture consumers attention next spring. The Garden Garnish line by Nelson features whirling copper sprinklers with circular designs incorporating a raindrop, hummingbird, sun face, flower and gazing ball. Retail prices will range from $59 to $79. “Its a sculpture as well as a piece that is functional,” said Shelley Gullifor, an assistant sales manager for Nelson, during an interview at the Hardware Show in Chicago last month.

They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service

Increasing concerns over homeland security issues have put ever-higher levels of pressure on state governments that are often too beleaguered and too cash-strapped to have any hope of keeping up with security suggestions and initiatives from the feds. “New Hampshire is unique compared to a lot of states. There is a lot of security and high-tech expertise, particularly in Nashua, Manchester and Portsmouth,” Steinberg notes. “In addition, were a small state where people and companies are closely connected. Its the small boat versus the ocean liner theory. Were small enough to move quickly and take on a wide range of security issues, from power systems to healthcare records, throughout the state. We could become one of the examples that other, larger states look to when they are doing their own security initiatives.” Steinberg knew it would take an organized group effort to address the security needs of the state, as well as the help and backing of a major organization, as technology security and cybersecurity werent his only concerns. An effort to improve statewide security and meet homeland security needs will require coordination of security guard providers and perimeter fence manufacturers, too, among many others, he stresses.
SECURITY: Just as Cisco Systems chief John Chambers is never short on vision, hes also never at a loss for a left-field metaphor. Speaking at a security conference last month, Chambers said that the network of the future will be so complex, thanks to mobility and collaboration, that it will need a security approach similar to the human bodys immune system. For the majority of attacks on the human body, youd never even know it occurred, Chambers said. Thats where we have to go with virtual and physical security. Weve got to move to innovative, proactive security architectures designed to open standards that will interface to each other effectively.

After completing the acquisition of three commercial printing companies at the end of April, Teldon International became one of the largest printers in lower mainland British Columbia. This current success is ironic because when the company was founded in 1969, and for close to 20 years after, it didnt own a single press. In the 1980s, Teldons management began researching the printing industry. “We decided that a large part of our program was on printed paper, like calendars. We decided to manufacture it ourselves,” says Michael McAdam, general manager and COO of Teldon International. To begin its internal printing capabilities, the company purchased a sheetfed press in the early part of the decade, then a Miller 66 half web press in 1989. Even after this printing expansion, the company still did not consider itself a printer. The presses were only used to manufacture the printed promotional products in the Teldon line.”Weve always viewed our promotional product side as our primary business,” says McAdam.

These abdominal cavity contents are enclosed in a thin, transparent, membranous sac that is actually formed inside the umbilical cord tissue. Using the Internet to put out an advertising message used to be a new idea, fraught with unknown risks and benefits. During the boom years of the late 1990s, many companies invested big money in Web sites and Internet ads. When the dot-com boom went bust, however, Internet advertising lost some of its earlier glow. Companies started to think harder about the results they expected from their online presence. In the last two years, Internet advertising has reemerged, local advertising executives said.
Web advertisings chief attraction, aside from the bargain-bin price scheme, has traditionally been the quantifiable click-through. If thats not enough for you, a Japanese research firm has developed another tool to determine online marketing effectiveness: an eye-tracker. The idea isnt quite as intrusive as it sounds: the people whose eye movements are tracked are the same focus group volunteers used by marketing directors to test advertisements and Web sites. The difference is that an eye tracker provides more objective feedback rather than traditional subjective feedback from methods like interviews, JCMR says.
BANNER ADVERTISEMENTSAlthough purchasing advertising space on Web sites can be expensive, it is an increasingly important marketing tactic for small businesses seeking to establish an online presence. Experts suggest that Internet advertisingwhether through banners or through smaller, sponsored by notes on Web sitesis the easiest and most effective way to encourage potential customers to visit your companys Web site. In addition, sophisticated new Web technology allows small businesses to focus their advertising dollars on specific geographic or demographic groups. Web-page sponsorship quickly increases traffic at your site by giving you almost instant access to the established viewer bases of other sites, Paul J. Dowling wrote in Web Advertising and Marketing. Your company canand shouldsponsor as many Web sites as it can afford, but you should be somewhat selective about the sites you sponsor. Be sure the sites you choose are of a general nature or are in some way related to your field of business. And make absolutely certain they dont conflict with the goals and/or themes of your site.

We visited two public courses and one private club in the Northeast this summer to see what everyday golfers were wearing. Of the 233 players we saw, 160 (69 percent) were wearing the predictable golf outfit of khaki shorts/pants, collared shirts (conservative in color and patterns) tucked in and baseball caps. Heres what else we saw:
Geoffrey Beene, well known to the ladies for his fashion designs, is almost as well known to men because of the clothes he creates for their lifestyles. Beene, as practical as he is creative, has done a collection of shirts for summer. Were not sure he had an Oklahoma summer of 103 degree temperatures or not, but he does know what New York Citys like this time of year — miserable in the 90s. Beene also does a shirt strictly for sport, a refined polo model woven of ribbed cotton ottoman. This shirt can do business with a jacket when needed. Another shirt maker, Van Heusen, also is turning on the lights for summer. The somber, deep colors dominating the winter and spring seasons are giving way to a lighter, brighter palette. Van Heusen, too, brings forth discreet patterns — mini-houndstooth checks and slim stripes. Cotton chambray is a favored fabric and cool, too. Highlighted in the summer collection are rayon blends.
The thermal, henley-style shirt features waffle-knit construction of 100 percent cotton.

With speeds up to 150 miles per hour, the new trains shave up to an hour off previous schedules, making the train an even better way to view spectacular Alpine scenery.
